Common Birth Injuries Due to Malpractice

Published on October 11th, 2018

When you are giving birth, the only thing that you want is a healthy baby. Unfortunately, birth injuries may occur, either occurring naturally or stemming from medical malpractice or negligence. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the following birth injuries are typically caused by negligence. Please contact our Naperville injury lawyers if you have recently given birth and your baby suffered an injury.

Clavicle Fractures

Clavicle fractures are the most typical type of fracture that occurs during delivery, usually occurring if a physician pulls too hard if your baby is in the breech position. It may also occur if the baby’s shoulder is forcefully pulled during a long delivery. On the bright side, these fractures typically heal within 10 days.

Cephalohematoma

This is an injury marked by bleeding that occurs underneath the cranium, typically directly under one of the cranial bones. A sign of cephalohematoma is a raised bump on the top of the infant’s head, and it is usually caused by birth-assisting tools. The bump itself may disappear, but it causes other risks including jaundice, anemia, hypotension, and rarely, meningitis.

Facial Paralysis

If there is too much pressure on the infant’s face during birth, it can result in damaged nerves. This typically occurs when physicians use forceps or a vacuum to get the baby out. The baby may be unable to close the eye on one side of their face, and there is usually no movement at all on that side of the face.
