Safe Driving Tips

Published on November 1st, 2018

You likely associate the winter with unsafe driving conditions, but the reality is, every season poses a threat to your safety on the road. Here are some suggestions from our Chicago car accident attorneys to help keep you safe during this fall season.

Beware of Slick Leaves

As the leaves begin to change color and fall from the trees, they add another layer of slickness to the road. This is especially true when it rains. If the roads are too slick, your tires can hydroplane, causing you to lose steering control. If you notice that the roads are wet or there are a lot of leaves on the road, make sure that you slow your speed and give yourself plenty of time to brake.

Watch Out for Animals

In the month of November, you are 3.5 times more likely to hit an animal, especially a deer, while you are driving. November is the main month that deer are mating, so you will see more of them outside. Animal-rights group PETA states that roughly 1 out of every 100 drivers will hit a deer during their lifetime.

Wear Sunglasses

During the fall season, the sun moves closer to the horizon, which makes the glare worse on the roads. Make sure that you wear sunglasses when it is sunny because the rays are more likely to reflect at low angles off of other cars, buildings and windows. Keep your windshield clear as well so streaks don’t interfere with your line of sight.
