On June 20, 2000, Mariela Ortiz was five years old when she was bitten on the right chest area by the defendants’ pit bull while she aws playing on the sidewalk near her house on the south side of Chicago. Marieal received stitches to her right chest area tha tleft permanent scarring. The dog owners and their attorneys denied responsibility, and claimed that Mariela had provoked the attack.
After the case had been assigned to Judge Solganick for the trail, the defendants’ attorneys offered $75,000 in settlement. The defendants agreed to pay the entire insurance policy limits of $300,000 to settle the case after approsimately half of the jury had been selected.
