Tips to Staying Safe as a Pedestrian

Shea Law Group Has Been a Family Owned Practice Since 1997

Pedestrian Safety

Both pedestrians and drivers are responsible for their own safety and the safety of those around them. However, as a pedestrian, let’s face it, we are much more vulnerable to injury than when we are inside a vehicle. The average car weighs about 4,000 pounds, or two tons, the average person – not even close. So, it would make sense, that as pedestrians, we should do all we can to keep ourselves safe. Below are a few tips that might help.

Be Visible

Make sure drivers can see you at all times, making direct eye contact with them before you cross the street in front of them whenever possible. This is even more important when you are walking at dawn, dusk, at night, or during inclement conditions. Other tips include staying in well-lit areas, wearing brightly colored clothing during the day and donning reflective clothing at night.

Avoid Distractions and Stay Alert

It seems that it gets more difficult with each passing day to avoid distractions. However, as a pedestrian, you are depending on your eyes and ears to help you stay safe. Stay alert and aware by skipping the headphones and putting your smart phone away.

Follow the Rules

Be aware of the traffic rules, not just the ones that apply to pedestrians, but the ones that apply to the vehicles around you. Obey the rules, signals, and signs and try to anticipate what drivers might do. Never assume any driver will yield the right of way. Again, make every effort to make eye contact with the driver of any approaching vehicle before stepping into the roadway.

Don’t Drink and Walk

Nearly half of all traffic crashes involving pedestrian casualties involve the consumption of alcohol. However, the surprising statistic is that in 34% of those incidents, it was the pedestrian that was intoxicated. Whether your walking or driving, alcohol impairs your judgement and slows your reflexes. Stay safe and stay sober whether you are behind the wheel or on your feet
